The Foundation of All Mathematics
What is Counting?
Counting is the process of determining the number of elements in a set. It is the most fundamental skill in mathematics and forms the basis for all arithmetic operations.
When we count, we assign a number to each object in a group, one at a time, in order. The last number we say tells us how many objects are in the group.
Natural Numbers
Natural numbers are the counting numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and so on. They go on forever — there is no largest natural number. Zero (0) is sometimes included, depending on the context.
The Number Line
A number line is a straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals. It helps us visualize the order of numbers and understand concepts like greater than and less than.
Skip Counting
Skip counting means counting by a number other than 1. For example, counting by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Counting by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25. This is the foundation for multiplication.
Counting Backwards
Counting backwards (or counting down) means starting from a larger number and going to a smaller one. This is the foundation for subtraction.
